Poynter: RSS as an Advertising Vehicle
Some early adopters are now experimenting with advertising on syndicated web content. RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a now-standard means to deliver a web site or newsletter's content to the desktop via newsreader software.
Advertising in RSS feeds comes in the form of text ads and banner ads. To date, the delivery mechanism has been free of advertising with the exception of IDG and a few others. Spam will be a much smaller issue with RSS because feeds cannot be sent unless they are first requested. Many will rail against advertising penetrating this mostly "pure" medium, but advertising always seems to find eyeballs wherever they reside.
