Reporters Without Borders has compiled a list of the countries it says are the worst offenders in censoring the internet.
The Paris-based group recently staged 24-hour protests in public spaces in New York and Paris to condemn 13 countries for their censorship of internet journalists, writes BusinessWeek. The 17,000 or so attendees of the protests voted on which state is most in need of greater internet freedom. Myanmar was ranked the worst offender, followed by China.
The others, in descending order of votes received, were Belarus, Iran, Tunisia, Cuba, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Vietnam, North Korea, Syria and Uzbekistan. A long-term goal of Reporters Without Borders is to encourage all 13 states to change their censorship policies.
The group also named 10 "countries to watch" that have begun to curb online freedoms, reports Red Herring. Among those countries are Bahrain, Egypt, Zimbabwe and the United States, which was cited because of legislation that authorizes intercepting online traffic.
