Record Industry Hates File Traders, Likes File Trading

Wired: BigChampagne is Watching You

Wired has an interesting article on a company called BigChampagne, which has created a business by tracking P2P downloads and selling the data back to record labels. I find it interesting that the music business wants to sue 12-year-olds for file trading, and at the same time, watch which files they're sharing online in order to help them market their records. Seems hypocritical to me.

Still, it seems like some of the intelligence BigChampagne distills from tracking downloads is kind of cool. Want to know how the audiences of Norah Jones and Dave Matthews duplicate? BigChampagne can tell you.
