RealPlayer Upgrade May Be Pirates' Boon

An RealPlayer upgrade due in late June enables users to download Web-based video in multiple formats, including Flash, according to a RealNetworks release. Content from site like YouTube can thus be downloaded onto hard drives and saved in Flash formats.

The new RealPlayer will enable consumers to download and record popular streaming formats, including Flash, Windows Media, Quicktime, and Real. Users who preload the new version of RealPlayer will see a download button floating next to videos they watch where they can post the video's link information directly.

This function is not new for those who know where to look. Sites like KeepVid are already capable of converting YouTube URLs into download-friendly Flash files. This simply cuts out an extra step, a move that may ring cavalier to companies that use YouTube for promotions.

Some companies see the move as a good one. General Manager Lisa Hungness for National Geographic Online's New Media department said, "This will be a great new trend in online video viewing for consumers and content owners alike because consumers can share links back to the video's origin where similar experiences may be found and enjoyed."

RealPlayer's upgrade includes a "tell a friend" feature that links referred users back to the original online content.

Although users will have to purchase RealPlayer Plus to burn freshly-downloaded video onto DVDs, they may burn them as data onto CD-Rs.

RealNetworks has stated downloading and burning DRM-protected videos will not be permitted.
