RealNetworks Becomes Major Moniker in Mobile Music

Property of RealNetworks

RealNetworks just signed a series of deals that will enable it to act as a prime purveyor of music and other mobile-based entertainment for European cell phone users, according to InternetRetailer.

RealNetworks agreed to buy Sony NetServices, a provider of digital music to mobile phones in eight European countries, for $9 million. RealNetworks will also enter a multi-year deal with Vodafone, which provides mobile service to 200 million people across over two dozen countries.

With the NetServices purchase Real will inherit Sony StreamMan, which allows customers to purchase music on their phones. It also tracks subscribers' musical tastes and makes comparative suggestions.

These relationships position RealNetworks to provide music downloads to over 196 million mobile subscribers across 12 telecom providers in 11 countries. Additionally, Real will provide hosted music service to 75 carriers in 37 countries.
