New York's independent WFMU 91.1 has launched a "60 second remix" contest asking listeners to submit any "known" song and reduce it to 60 seconds, according to Random Culture (via Josh Spears).

The station is then playing the 60 second remixes on the air as well as posting them online. However, the quality of the submissions sets the bar much higher than user-generated campaigns usually smattered with mediocre submissions.

The phenomenon can be credited to the station's listenership and reach.

The station's online broadcast paired with its eclectic programming invite die-hard music fans from around the world to mash up their favorite songs using intuitive programs like GarageBand.
