The web has more high-quality, professionally-produced video content than it did previously — but the medium still lacks mainstream popularity, reports Mediaweek.
The popularity of online video — particularly video from professional talent — grew during to the writers strike earlier this year. That strike helped spark demand for alternative entertainment as audiences sought alternatives to scripted TV. Some believe that the introduction of more established TV writers in the professional web video space would draw more audiences to the medium.
But culling the interest of the masses isn't everyone's view of online success. A representative from EQAL, the company that produced LonelyGirl15 and other online series, suggests finding a niche, and becoming successful in that niche, is sufficient for success on the internet — versus on a medium like television, where a show's success depends largely on the broadest viewership possible.
