Recent data leaking flubs by major personal information holders ChoicePoint, Bank of America and others inspired some in Congress to design laws to limit what companies can do with personal information. Some deal with the sort of leads that happened at information brokers like ChoicePoint, but some, according to CNET, are hoping to use the issue to put limitations on commercial websites as well. A Cato Institute executive said Senators Charles Schumer, D-NY and Patrick Leahy, D-VT, who have hinted at more limiting measures, are "using this as an excuse to advance not-terribly-relevant privacy protections." At least some Republican and Administration officials indicated they were also supportive of consumer privacy protections, although perhaps ones not quite as dramatic as those suggested by the prominent Democrats.
