On August 24, Microsoft will be discontinuing service and support for Popfly, a mashup and games creation app.
A blog post by team leader John Montgomery reports that all sites, references and resources will be removed after August 24. Account access, and games or mashups created via Popfly, will also be discontinued.
"However, Microsoft is still very much dedicated to helping you express your creativity," Montgomery went on, recommending Microsoft Web Platform Installer for those that want to go on developing web apps; Microsoft XNA or Kodu for would-be Xbox programmers; and Microsoft Express for those that wish to program on Windows.
Popfly debuted in private beta two years ago, following the launch of Yahoo Pipes, a mashup app proffered by rival Yahoo.
In March of this year, Microsoft announced plans to shut down adCenter Analytics, an ad offering developed to contend with Google Analytics. Existing users will be able to access their accounts through December 31, 2009; the adCenter Analytics blog was also renamed "Insights & Analysis."
Early 2009 also witnessed a number of service cessations by Google, which shut down or cut development on projects like Dodgeball, Jaiku and Google Video in January; by February, it stated intentions to shut down its Audio Ads and Adsense for Audio services as well.
