Only 19 percent of internet users have downloaded a podcast, up from an estimated 12 percent that have ever downloaded a podcast in 2006, according to a report released by Pew Internet & American Life Project, reports MediaBuyerPlanner.
Of the 19 percent that downloaded a podcast, 17 percent — or three percent of internet users — do so on a typical day, up from 1 percent that did so on a typical day in 2006, writes Clickz.
Broadband drives continued adoption of podcast use, according to the study. Not surprisingly, people ages 50 and older are less likely to listen to podcasts regularly than those under 50. Of the under-50 group, 23 percent have downloaded a podcast, and four percent did so on the day prior to the survey, suggesting they do so on a typical day. Broken down further, 27 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds have downloaded a podcast, while 20 percent in the 30- to 49 age bracket have.
People in households earning $75,000 or more tend to listen to more podcasts, but not by much, Ars Technica points out. Men listen to podcasts more than women, at 22 percent compared to 16 percent.
Technology-related programming is the most popular, followed by comedy, religion and business.
