YouTube will debut a wireless version of its popular online video-sharing site next year, but a new software program from Orb Networks will already allow users to view YouTube videos with their cell phones.
Beginning this week, Orb will offer users a program that lets them view, search and create media channels from the internet and display the content on cell phones and laptops from sites like YouTube or Google Video, Reuters reports. "Everything you can play on your own computer can go anywhere," Orb founder Joe Costello told Reuters. Adding YouTube to the service "required small tweaks," he said.
Orb also says the service could be used to allow users to access music and video files from their PC, without having to pay to download the files again. Orb expects to announce two deals with wireless carriers later this week. The new program works only with advanced smartphones like Motorola's Q model or Nokia's N80 phone.
The new service works by installing a program on the user's home PC or laptop that uses RSS feeds provided by YouTube and others to allow viewers to link directly to specific video categories, such as the day's most popular items.
