Online Shopping for Bleeding Hearts

A new shopping website scheduled to launch this month will offer products from companies that ostensibly share their customers' liberal social values - on labor relations, animal rights, fair trade, charitable giving, clean energy and recycling - reports CNET. Alonovo.com allows users to define the social and environmental values they consider important and then offers up information one how merchants are rated according to data from KLD Research and Analytics. The sales are via Amazon.com, and Alonovo earns a commission of 5-7.5 percent for each transaction and will donate 20 percent of that to nonprofits.

The site is in part intended to "provide a counterbalance to the pure profit motive," according to cofounder George Polisner. "We believe that if we provide a compelling and easy experience and the pricing is reasonably competitive that (the site) will do well."
