Online Adspend to Grow 7.6 percent in 2005

Internet advertising will grow a healthy 7.6 percent in 2005, though not quite in the double-digit range of recent years, while cable TV and Hispanic media advertising grow at a more robust 11.6 percent and 10.5 percent, respectively, according to a TNS Media Intelligence forecast presented at the annual AdWatch conference in Manhattan this morning, reports AdAge. All told, total advertising spending is forecast to hit $145.3 billion this year, for a year-over year growth of 3.4 percent, compared with the 9.8 percent rate at which it grew in 2004, TNS president and CEO Steven Fredericks predicted.

Three media were expected to register adspend decreases for the year: radio, down a tiny 0.1 percent; B2B magazines, down 0.9 percent; and spot TV, down 6.4 percent (due in part to the absence of local elections). Magazines adspend is forecast to increase 7.5 percent. Newspapers are expected to see a moderate, 3.8 percent growth, and network TV 1.1 percent.
