The One Laptop Per Child project's $175 "XO" machines will finally kick off in October, as governments have ordered the 3 million minimum volume needed to begin mass production, reports The Globe and Mail.
The "XO" laptop is the ultimate in utilitarian computing, featuring an open-source interface designed for children, a sunlight-readable display, low power consumption, built-in wireless networking, and a pull cord for recharging by hand.
Originally known as "$100 laptop" when the idea was first incepted by Nicholas Negroponte, the organization's long-term goal is to bring the laptop's price down even further.
Taiwan's Quanta Computer Inc. will produce the computers. Countries on the list to receive the laptops include Libya, Thailand and Uruguay.
A test set of the laptops received scalding reviews in Nigeria when primary school children were found surfing adult content.
