A Wells Fargo executive pointed out to Internet Retailer that, while much news is made about online security breaches of private data, the greatest threat to people's personal information remains good old real-world security. Restaurants, stores, and in one shiningly bad example, a sports club, need to provide physical security to prevent the theft of information, such as social security numbers, that can be used in identity theft. Debra Rossi, Wells Fargo's EVP of merchant payment systems, pointed out that making online transactions secure is just a matter of software, but making stores secure has proven to be a slower process, as it involves physical structures, and worse, people.
