NYTimes.com Preps 'Instant Op-Ed' for January Launch

Opinion as business model

Next month NYTimes.com will launch a feature called "Instant Op-Ed," enabling site editors to post opinion pieces on breaking news with greater expediency.

"Our Op-Ed now is very rapid response, but it is at the most the next day," stated Editorial Page Editor Andrew Rosenthal, who made the announcement.

Instant Op-Ed is served by three editors and a web producer, which are compiling experts to populate the offering for a panoply of topics. Readers will be permitted to post commentary.

According to Rosenthal, this marks the first collaboration between The New York Times editorial page and its news departments.

Rosenthal helpfully added, "We are looking at a way to take advantage of the expandability of the internet, the back and forth of it and [its] instantaneous nature."
