Citizen journalism, meet
pulp fiction
Citizen news network NowPublic.com acquired Truemors, a rumor website.
NowPublic provides publishing tools for "citizen journalists," including a space to blog, upload videos or submit stories from other news sources. Content is ranked, digg-style, by the community.
The model has proven successful. NowPublic says it has reporters in 160 countries. Last year it struck a deal with the Associated Press, which buys stories from the citizen news site based on the creator's asking price.
The company drew $10.6 million in series A funding in 2007. Truemors is its first acquisition, reports MediaPost.
"They have a great editorial team and we want to acquire great editorial," said CEO Leonard Brody of NowPublic. "We think we've done everything we can organically, so now the question is are we going to recruit, acquire, or something else."
Truemors was founded and funded by Guy Kawasaki, who will now chair the NowPublic advisory board. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
