Nokia to Reposition as 'Internet Company'

At Nokia's shareholders meeting last week, CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo told investors the company would like to act "more like an internet company" than a "traditional manufacturer."

"Companies such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft are not our traditional competitors, but they are major forces that must be reckoned with," Kallasvuo added.

According to Ars Technica, the handheld-centric firm — recently named the world's top vendor — has reorganized itself into two departments: devices and services.

"Services" will likely cover a range of new Nokia projects, all relevant to its core product: the mobile unit. In February the company launched a mobile game store and social networking site, as well as a mobile ad network. March saw the debut of its online music retailer in Germany. Nokia also signed a deal to bring Silverlight to some of its handhelds.

Its pending acquisition of Navteq, a GPS vendor, will likely also propel Nokia into location-based mobile advertising and handheld navigation systems, Ars Technica wrote.

In late March, Nokia rival Motorola decided to cut handsets away from its other, more profitable operations.
