Hoping to boost its listings business, Yahoo has selected former Knight-Ridder exec Hilary Schneider to head the company's new Marketplaces division.

Schneider will lead the newly formed unit, which will include autos, classifieds, HotJobs, personals, real estate, shopping and auctions, travel and Yellow Pages, according to MediaPost. The hiring of Schneider, who starts Monday, is consistent with Yahoo's recent moves to improve its listings properties, such as the revamping of its real estate section with more maps and local market data.

Yahoo is no doubt looking to grow its share of the booming online classifieds market - and hoping that Schneider will be as successful in her new position as she was at Knight Ridder. There, she tripled online revenues and increased profit margins significantly during her tenure as head of its digital division.
