Netflix Releases Set-Tops for Direct-to-TV Rentals

In-house cannibalism

Online DVD rental service Netflix is releasing a set-top box that delivers movies and other programming to televisions.

The box was developed in partnership with Korea's LG Electronics. It broadens Netflix's online film streaming service, which is freely available to subscribers.

The product puts Netflix in Apple TV territory — and all the better, considering Apple may unveil a DVD rental service for iTunes in mid-January.

Pricing on the unit was not divulged, but similar devices from Apple and Vudu cost between $299 and $399.
