NBCU, Viacom Put Trimmers to Labor Force

This won't hurt ... much

Up to 500 jobs, or 3% of the work force, are expected to be cut at NBCU, parent company of Weather.com and co-parent of Hulu.com.

NBC News bureaus in Dallas and Los Angeles will be affected, writes TV Newser (via MediaBuyerPlanner). LA correspondent John Larson, who reported for Dateline for many years, and Mark Mullen, who had a two-year run reporting for NBC in Beijing, are among the cuts. Heather Allan, a bureau chief for NBC News special events, was also let go.

Media conglomerate Viacom is also planning massive cuts. The company plans to slim down by 7% — a loss of 850 positions.

Announcements of some 30,000 layoffs have hit the market in the last day as economic woes mount, according to Dow Jones.
