Four CBS shows - CSI, Survivor, NCIS, and Amazing Race - will be available on a video-on-demand basis for 99 cents per 24-hour period for each show, beginning in January 2006, reports MediaWeek (via MediaBuyerPlanner). The programs will be available on Comcast systems in all of the CBS markets in which it owns and operates stations, including seven of the top 10 markets.

Viewers who buy the shows will be able to fast forward through the commercials, but will not be able to skip them.

CBS's news came just hours after NBC Universal announced that it will launch an on-demand service, through DirecTV, that allows consumers to download prime-time shows - commercial-free - for 99 cents, according to AdAge.

NBC's offerings include Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, The Office, Surface, USA Network's Monk, and SciFi Channel's Battlestar Galactica.

CBS and NBC's offerings cost about half of what ABC is offering via the new video iPod, and can be seen on a regular TV screen.
