Nanotech Hotspots Mapped, SF and Boston are Prominent

An industry group called The Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies has created a map of most of the nanotech development sites across the country, reports ZDNet.

The Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies used a Google Maps mash-up to highlight how pervasive nanotech labs are across the country. While 47 states in the U.S. have some sort of nanotech lab set up, the two largest development hubs are San Francisco and Boston.

Some community groups are concerned about problems that could arise if the nanotech industry is not regulated, or if problems occur.

15 percent of all manufactured goods are expected to use some form of nanotechnology by 2014, about $2.6 trillion worth. In 2006, spending on nanotech research reached $12.4 billion, up 30 percent from 2005.
