MySpace Opens Platform to Apps; WSJ Cozies Up to Facebook

Who wins the battle
of wandering minds?

The MySpace Developer Platform is set to debut next Tuesday. The launch avails portions of MySpace's code to application developers.

The program shall accomplish two goals:

  1. Enable developers to monetize creations with ad integration while improving MySpace's functionality.
  2. Improve on mistakes Facebook made with its own Apps program, notably regarding the copyright infringement issue over Scrabulous. MySpace is building defenses against similar lawsuits-in-the-make.

Meanwhile, MySpace rival Facebook has made a new friend: The Wall Street Journal.

The WSJ has added a "SeeThis?" button to its online stories. SeeThis? enables readers to view which Facebook friends added the story to their profile.

Encouraging users to share stories may improve reader loyalty and the Wall Street Journal's brand relevance. An accompanying Facebook widget also highlights the most recommended WSJ stories in a person's network.
