Such is life
Music streaming firm imeem has acquired SNOCAP, a DRM technology company.
"imeem shares SNOCAP's focus on enabling artists to promote their music in new ways," said CEO Rusty Rueff.
SNOCAP created its own content ID platform and digital registry, enabling unsigned and independent artists and labels to control the online distribution of their music. Its registry includes over seven million unique songs.
Like online video, music streaming is a cheap commodity in the golden age of social networking. With that in mind, imeem spent the past year bulking up its name with ad functionalities and strategic relationships. Last month it opened its back-end and music catalog to developers. In 2007, it signed distribution deals with Universal, EMI, Warner and Sony.
SNOCAP has been MySpace's platform of choice for peddling indie music. Last year it closed a distribution deal with EMI.
COO Ali Aydar of SNOCAP, at one time an employee at Napster, will join imeem as VP of operations. "He brings with him a talented team of engineers and music industry professionals," writes imeem.
Financial terms of the deal were not shared.
