Motorola, Yahoo Expand Mobile Deal; Phone Sales Sizzling

Motorola and Yahoo have reached a multiyear deal to preload several Yahoo services on millions of new mobile devices, while the phonemaker reported record quarterly sales.

Reuters reports that in the first half of 2007 Motorola will start loading Yahoo email, search, address book and local search features onto handsets in markets worldwide - in what is an expansion of an earlier agreement. They will also jointly market the preloaded Motorola gadgets via online networks, phone packaging and other channels.

Meanwhile, Motorola's quarterly financial performance sizzled, writes BusinessWeek, with record quarterly sales of $10.9 billion, up 29 percent from the year-ago quarter. Net earnings were $1.4 billion, up nearly 45 percent. mobile-devices sales soared 46 percent, and operating earnings increased 62 percent, to $799 million.

And Motorola continued to boost its global market share, gaining ground agains chief rival Nokia. Motorola says its share is at 22 percent, up from about 17 percent a year ago - and edging its way toward Nokia's 33.3 share.
