Silicon.com: Mobile spam: Is the next plague upon us?
A recent study of 2,822 silicon.com readers found 69% have received spam messages on their mobile phone. Spam is a growing problem everywhere but is relatively new to mobile phones. Yet, with the rise of SMS, it is bound to increase. This phenomenon is hitting Europe first, where SMS is far more entrenched than it is to date in America.
There is one important controlling factor with mobile spam though. It costs the sender money. Unlike email, a mobile message can cost as much as ten cents to send. Not to mention the charge the user gets to receive the message. This is one ray of hope that will limit the widespread use of mobile spamming. Because, as we know, spammer are cheap bastards!
