DDB Seattle's 15th consecutive commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 16) took an interactive turn this year, in the form of RememberSegregation.org, a just-launched website, the splash page of which compels a choice by visitors: clicking on a link for whites or another for "coloreds," reports ClickZ. The intent, of course, is to give a small taste of what segregation was like.
The entry page into the "colored" section warns visitors, "for your protection and for the sake of decency, please remain within your side of this web page. If you should happen to move into an area designated for persons of the white race, your safety cannot be guaranteed."
The site is being promoted with newspaper ads and a direct mail piece to government officials, high school administrators and C-level Seattle execs. Potential media partners for online advertising apparently said they lacked inventory to donate; much of the other media has been donated.
The site offers a bio of MLK, a photo gallery, a civil rights timeline, audio downloads of King's "I have a dream" and "I've been to the mountaintop" speeches, and some of his writings.
