Microsoft is looking to squeeze extra revenue out of Xbox 360 users by hiking up the fees they pay for online extras, reports USA Today.
Xbox players pay an annual fee of $50 in order to compete against other people online. To boost their capabilities they can collect maps or other tools specific to certain games.
Most such items have been free. Now Microsoft wants to charge about $10 per item, which couldĀ ultimately wind up doubling total amount players pay per month after purchasing everything they need for gameplay.
Microsoft plans on splitting the charge with game publishers. Such add-ons are inexpensive to produce, since most of the work was done during game development, and will yield high profit margins. In some cases Microsoft implemented the charge even despite publisher resistance.
Microsoft said that while complaints are expected, such feedback is likely to come from a vocal minority and not the gaming population at large.
