Microsoft has purchased Caligari, a small company that specializes in 3-D and animation software.

Caligari uses trueSpace software to render lifelike environments with interfaces that are easy to navigate.

Caligari's integration will improve Microsoft's Virtual Earth mapping system, reports IDG News Service.

TechCrunch compared the acquisition to Google Earth's 2006 purchase of SketchUp, which gives users the ability to add detailed 3-D objects to specific environments within the world.
