Microsoft is partnering with set-top box chipmaker Broadcom to bring PC features to TV.
Microsoft will adapt IPTV software, MediaRoom, to Broadcom boxes so users can connect online with products and services.
The partnership is designed to encourage use of the IPTV standard. Microsoft rival Apple launched a similar product, Apple TV, last March. Netflix is also planning a set-top box service.
Information Week notes the two will face hurdles Stateside. Cable providers historically shy from added interactivity, worried it will interfere with the bandwidth used for programming.
But while US providers and companies ponder these small matters, interactive TV flourishes in Europe.
