After getting the records from 13 online tobacconists, the state of Michigan is sending large tax bills to 553 of its residents, according to CNET. This first round of bills - accounting for the records of just one of the e-commerce firms - amounts to $1.4 million. The state is giving them until March 14 to pay the uncollected tobacco tax that reaches back four years. Michigan charges $2 per pack of cigarettes, and collected almost $1 billion last year. One e-commerce firm, eSmokes, cancelled Michigan orders once it heard of the legal issues. California, Washington and Wisconsin have also attempted to collect unpaid tobacco taxes.
