To celebrate its 50-year anniversary, the UK's Marketing Society launched 50 Golden Brands, a send-up of 50 brands that influenced each of the past 50 years.
1959 was ruled the year of Barbie. '85 went to Microsoft, '88 to Nike, '01 to the iPod, and '07 to O2. 2008's brand has not yet been named.
But these decisions are subject to change. According to The Marketing Society, "every year is up for debate." Users may suggest alternative brands if they prefer.
"Marketers have played a major role in reflecting and shaping the last 50 years," said CEO Hugh Burkitt of The Marketing Society.
"But we want customers who are, of course, the real bosses to tell us what they think. Our 50 is there to be challenged and argued over and we are very much looking forward to hearing where they think we've got it wrong."
