Malaysia Tightens Fist Around Political Bloggers

Kamarudin of Malaysia Today

The government of Malaysia has just released a statement informing citizens that anti-terrorism laws could be effected against bloggers that insult the country's king or the religion of Islam.

The BBC reports that Raja Petra Kamarudin, editor of a political website and a major online personality in Malaysia, was questioned by police after the government filed a complaint against him. The anti-terrorism statement was released shortly thereafter.

New rules tying deviant bloggers to acts of terrorism could allow officials to detain suspects indefinitely without a trial or formal charges.

Claiming the move was aimed at moderating posts on the internet with regard to "sensitive issues," officials say the law was not meant to hurt online freedom.

"Some people feel that [bloggers] have crossed the line, in making racist remarks," said Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak to The Straits Times.

Kamarudin, however, is known for critiques about the current prime minister and members of the government. His website Malaysia Today attracts about a quarter of a million visitors per day, more readers than most Malaysian newspapers can claim.

The offending personality promised to give officials "a hell of a tough time" as he turned himself in.
