Yet another way is surfacing for readers to get the magazine content they want, when and where they want it, this time via Facebook news feeds.
Synapse, a Time Inc. subsidiary that sells subscriptions for publishers, is working with e-commerce application company Alvenda to create a system that lets Facebook users buy print subscriptions without ever leaving their Facebook news feeds, reports AdAge.
Beginning this summer, magazines will be able to sell subscriptions within their news feeds. They will also be able to expand news feeds into full articles, complete with ads. For example, explains Wade Gerten, Alvenda CEO, if someone shares a magazine article link with a Facebook friend, the friend’s news feed would allow them to expand the item into a full article, including ads and the option to subscribe. Facebook Wants Nothing from It
The new system grew from a suggestion from the Magazine Publishers of America, Gerten says. Revenue from subscriptions sold via the new capabilities will be split between Synapse, the publisher and Alvenda, with Facebook taking no cut of the action.
Will It Really Sell?
It may be difficult to imagine that a Facebook user in the midst of being social on the site will stop to purchase a magazine subscription just because of a blurb in a news feed, but the ad product could get interesting, mulls Econsultancy. Currently, there isn’t a way to monetize a blurb in Facebook’s news feed - but allowing for extended quotes, complete with advertising, could be a huge additional revenue stream for publishers.
