Mac Gaming Industry May Be Suffering Options Gluttony

Gaming on a Mac is
tough to navigate

When it comes to gaming on a Mac, one had to wait, and hope, for a release on OS X while Windows users got the jump on the hottest new game, reports BusinessWeek. Today, a flurry of options make gaming on Macs a confusing endeavor.
When Mac switched over to Intel chips, it ushered in a new era in which Mac users could run Jobs machines on Gates software allowing Macs to enjoy computer games the day they came out.

And game developers are now offering their own options on how to game on a Mac. Id Software is developing a new gaming engine called Id Tech 5 for the Mac OS. Developers can use the engine to create detailed virtual worlds.

Then there's EA's strategy. EA will launch a handful of popular games in Appple-friendly format, thanks to a technology called Cider. Cider uses similarities between PCs and Macs to interpret programs from one platform to the other.

Though options are great, the dearth of simplicity - an Apple hallmark - may add more frustration than enjoyment to the future of Mac-based gaming.
