Free dating
A free online dating site that began as a class project for an aspiring ASP.NET programmer has turned $10 million in profit in 12 months.
According to The New York Times, Plenty of Fish has attracted over 600,000 users thanks to the site's lack of membership fees, which most other dating sites, like Match and SinglesNet, rely on.
Instead, the site is monetized through advertising and apparently requires a mere 10 hours per week of work from the site's creator, Markus Frind.
However, it isn't the prettiest site, the coding on the site has flaws, and customers rely on forums for customer service.
Last year, another free dating site, HotorNot, ended its existence due to the proliferation of spam.
