Local Results Strain to Appear among Search Listings

ClickZ reviews the penetration of local content into search listings and finds it lacking. Only five percent of queries wind up returning local results. This is partly due to the ease with which national brands can put a thin veneer of locally-oriented content to capture a great proportion of the results. Most local advertising is sold by local reps, a labor structure of extremely high overhead, anathema to Google's automation culture.
