Shakira, a Live Earth shaker
The Live Earth global concerts broke an online entertainment show record by generating more than 9 million Internet streams on Microsoft's MSN, reports Reuters.
Streams don't necessarily mean 9 million people tuned in; people can switch streams on and off, creating more numbers.
The previous record was held by 2005's Live 8 global concerts to fight poverty. AOL hosted Live 8 and claims 5 million people logged on to the event, though it did not give data on the number of streams generated.
Further, in the six weeks following the Live 8 event, the event was streamed 100 million times. Live Earth is expected to be three times bigger as organizers expect 80 percent of the viewership to see the event on-demand.
