Jewel and Jewel-Osco's 204 supermarkets
are the latest to adopt finger identification technology (or, pay per touch) as a way for customers to pay for their purchases by placing their finger on a piece of glass, writes the Chicago Tribune. The authentication system uses hundreds of characteristics in the grooves at the end of the index finger tto recognize a customer at the checkout line.
The Jewel deal is the largest for privately held Pay By Touch of San Francisco; it says it enables 100,000 people in 14 states to buy items without cash, credit or an ID even for buying alcohol.
Last July, WKMG-TV in central Florida reported that Disney World had begun requiring finger scans of all patrons. The Department of Defense uses it, too.
