Justice Department Probes Online Music Pricing

A Department of Justice antitrust division investigation is looking into the online music industry for "possible anti-competitive practices," reports the Washington Post. Warner Music Group confirms it has received a Justice Department request for information, but the tree other major players - Universal Music Group, EMI Music and Sony BMG - would not comment. They have been or will soon be subpoenaed, according to the Post, likely regarding "price fixing."

In 2000, the Federal Trade Commission found the five largest distributors of recorded music guilty of marketing agreements setting artificially high prices for music CDs. Music labels are under similar pressure to figure out new, profitable pricing models for the online marketplace.
