Japan Test-Drives the Future with 'IT Lifestyle'

The Economist's modern-
day Johnny Appleseed

Apparently the meaning of the digital age remains open to interpretation. According to PSFK, the "digital age" suggests an era of extreme connectivity, where everything and everyone is wirelessly connected (via The Economist).

Japan has already begun laying groundwork for just such a world as demonstrated by the Tokyo Ubiquitous Technology Project. Just last week the Japanese government announced plans to set up a testing zone for the "IT lifestyle," in which citizens and objects are connected wirelessly.
Ultimately, the Japanese government hopes to incorporate wireless technology into the very threads of everyday life: from providing medical services, to preventing car accidents and buying veggies.
A mix of mobile, web and RFID technology will make this possible. Seniors will have vital signs sent to the hospital as they're headed there, cars will automatically slow down if pedestrians unexpectedly cross the road and people can buy vegetables with their mobile phones if need be.

These technologies will be tried in the IT Lifestyle testing zone.
