SearchEngineWatch: Google to Overture: Mine's Bigger
Google bigger
Overture big
Now that Overture owns the FAST index, they get to go head-to-head with Google in the size wars. Most already realize, though, that size is not the factor that matters when doing a search; it's results. Did we find what we were looking for?
In that area, most agree that Google still has an advantage. However, Overture, and soon Yahoo, will have plenty of resources to devote to building a better algorithmic index, should they so choose. Merging the FAST, Altavista and Inktomi indices will surely put Yahoo at the top in index size, even though the URL overlap may be 90 percent. The portal wars will surely continue, and soon MSN will join the fray.
