iPod Comes to the Friendly Skies

Apple has announced a deal with six major airlines that will allow for iPod connectivity to in-flight entertainment systems by the middle of 2007.

Six major airlines, including Air France, Continental, Delta, Emirates, KLM and United will offer passengers iPod seat connections that power and charge their iPods during flight - and allow the video content on their iPods to be viewed on their seat-back displays, eCommerce Times reports. Apple says it is working with Panasonic Avionics to try to get more iPod connectivity deals with airlines, according to Red Herring.

The announcements came as Microsoft's Zune media player debuted on Tuesday. The player, which has received lukewarm reviews and opened to tepid sales, is Microsoft's attempt to compete in the media player market that Apple all but owns with the iPod.

In response, Apple appears to be attempting to expand its 70 million userbase for the iPod with a flurry of partnerships. Earlier this year, Apple partnered with apparel maker Nike in offering versions of the iPod that work with the company's athletic wear. In August, Apple also announced deals with Ford, General Motors and Mazda to offer iPod integration with their vehicle stereo systems. Over 70 percent of 2007 model U.S. automobiles will offer iPod integration.
