CitySearch may have been ahead of its time. Back when it launched, the challenge of amassing local advertisers efficiently drove CitySearch and Microsoft Sidewalk to the brink of ruin. Now with Google's ability to target ads topically and locally may be the savior of local portals. Self-serve advertising and text-only ads are much easier to administer than banners, and often more effective.
