Intel's Classmate
Intel has pulled out of the Nicholas Negroponte's One Laptop Per Child project (OLPC), reasoning that the OLPC wanted an exclusivity commitment against rival offerings.
Intel promotes its own low-cost laptop, the Classmate, in many of the same countries as OLPC, reports BBC News.
Intel's Classmate operates on Microsoft Windows, a familiar interface among computer users because of Microsoft's longtime hold over the PC market. In contrast, the OLPC's XO runs on Linux.
Negroponte accused Intel of selling the Classmate at a loss to make the XO less attractive to buyers.
OLPC's XO is currently powered by Intel rival AMD. Intel was expected to unveil an Intel-powered XO at this year's CES show.
