If a blogger were to
podcast in a forest…
Podcasting, the internet equivalent of public access radio, will get a big boost in prominence in mid-May, when Infinity Broadcasting will launch an all podcast radio station. That means that the vast majority of listeners, who currenly don't read blogs, will soon be able to easily avoid listening to those same bloggers' reedy voices on the radio. San Francisco's 1550 KYCY will be sacrificed for the project, although it sits on the AM band, so few in San Francisco will notice. The new station will be called KYOURadio. BlogAd's very interesting survey of some 30,000 bloggers revealed last month that - even among those that blog (and even those that self-select to answer blogging surveys) - only eight percent ever listen to podcasts.
Mainstream media outlets, seeing the intense popularity of Apple Computer's iPod music players, coupled with a trend of more user-created content being available, have referred to podcasting so frequently that many seem to be getting the misimpression that podcasting is actually popular.
While a handful of mainstream stations have provided podcast feeds for some of their content selections, Infinity's move would be the first all-podcast-all-the-time format.
Listeners can upload their content for consideration as of today on the KYOURadio website. Producers will review the audio files, making sure they comply with FCC rules and such. Infinity representatives said that the station will monitor listener feedback daily to help determine content choices.
