Ad Networks and Analytics:

  • The Travel Ad Network adds Maps.com, increasing global uniques by 25 million users per month.
  • MTV launched Tribes, an ad network for publishers — and advertisers — targeting youth. One launch publisher is Echo; an outset advertiser is Pepsi.
  • MIVA is launching an online ad platform to replace its existing pay-per-click model across the US and EU. The service will target site publishers with a broad range of online advertising and marketing formats.
  • LinkedIn is launching the Audience Network, providing advertisers with "a very influential audience" of mostly-professional users.

Agencies and Marketing Execs:

  • Scanscout makes Bill Day its new CEO. Acting CEO Waikit Lau shall become president of the company. Day was formerly CMO at Marchex.
  • Mike Svatek has been appointed VP of product strategy at Bazaarvoice.
  • TBWA/Chiat/Day won Visa's $600 million marketing account.
  • The Old Mill District appointed tbd its agency of record.
  • Eloqua made Brian Kardon, formerly of Forrester, CMO of marketing.
  • Ex eBay exec Henry Vogel joins Apptera as President and CEO.
  • MuseWorx, a marketing operating system, added Allen Rosenshine, Chairman Emeritus of BBDO Worldwide, to its board of directors.

Biz Buzz:

  • Online media and data services firm Theorem Inc. expands to the UK. Marcus Harding was chosen to be its biz dev manager there.
  • The Ad Council and US Department of Energy hope to instill an "energy ethic" in future generations with a new ad campaign by Goodby, Silverstein and Partners. The campaign is composed of excuses people typically make to avoid saving energy.
  • Tech support firm CrossLoop closed $6 million in a Series B round led by Venrock. Two board members were added: Richard Moran of Venrock, and CEO Andre Haddad of Shopping.com, owned by eBay. CrossLoop's A-round took place in December and was worth $3 million.

Legal, Government and Regulation:

  • The European Commission has begun examining the Google/Yahoo sponsored search deal.

Mobile:

  • While internet access is increasingly available on airplanes, VoIP — which would enable users to make in-flight phone calls — remains taboo.

Overseas:

  • Japan, Sweden and the Netherlands lead in top-performing broadband and availability.

Publishing:

  • CheckM8 launched a new version of the AdVantage Inventory Yield Manager, which enables site publishers to predict future conditions in their online space.

Social Networks:

  • Facebook would prefer to think of itself as a social utility, not a social network. Yes, those would be delusions of grandeur.
