Ad Networks and Analytics:

  • 50 percent of respondents to an E-consultancy survey use two sets of analytics tools on their site, presumably because a stable average is considered more accurate than one or the other.
  • The Internet Advertising Bureau released definitions of commonly-used digital video in-stream terms.

Agencies and Marketing Execs:

  • Jeff Weiner is the latest exec to jump ship at Yahoo, landing as "executive in residence" at both Accel Partners and Greylock Partners, two venture capital firms.
  • The UK's channel Five appointed Grey London its new creative partner. It replaces VCCP, which held the account for two years. Responsibilities include repositioning FIVER, Five's new digital channel.
  • Clickable appointed seven new execs: Jonathan Betz, Senior Director, Engineering (formerly of Google); Maxine Friedman, Senior Director, Biz-Dev (formerly of BrandIntel); Bill Masterson, Senior Director, Sales (formerly Google); Sandeep Sahi, Senior Director, Engineering (ex-Microsoft); Jeremy Gerstle, Director, Recommendation Sciences (ex-Network Communication Systems); Ben Seslija, Director, Analytics (ex-Leapfrog); Ken Yarmosh, Director of Search Technology (ex-Viget Labs).

Biz Buzz:

  • The Oxygen cable network is settling into its identity as part of the Women@NBC group. It is launching a redesigned website and campaign to draw new users.
  • NBC is planning to bring eight of its station's websites under its own control, giving it more capacity to expand the sites and capture ad sales.
  • Jivox, a service that lets small businesses create their own video ads, raised $10 million in its second round of financing.
  • MTVN's Nickelodeon Kids and Family Group is creating two new divisions, one to focus on online games and the other on virtual worlds.

Mobile:

  • Yahoo says its mobile search service is growing in Asia and will be offered by six additional telecom providers, bringing it to over 600 million mobile subscribers.
  • Mobile sales of ringtones, full music tracks and other tones from AT&T Mobility will be added into Nielsen's RingScan tracking service.
  • Past experiences with the mobile internet have been poor for consumers, according to new research from AKQA and dotMobi, but about 90 percent of survey respondents still are interested in seeing what it can do.

New and Improved:

  • A Hearst-Argyle-owned TV station will test ads that send users info about an advertiser over the 'net, after the viewer makes a remote control-based request.


Online Content:

  • Universal Music agreed to provide music to Last.fm, filling the gap Warner Music Group made when it recently pulled its songs from the site.
  • Pew released a study showing almost half of Americans go online for deeper coverage of the electoral contests. Social networking and video-watching are two of the most popular activities.

Publishing:

  • Texterity is offering digital versions of unpopular publications for free, since no one seems anxious to pay for them.
  • IAC/Interactive and Dow Jones created FiLife, a personal finance site that dispenses advice and compares users to their peers.
  • ESPN acquired Student Sports, an event management service that operates sites focusing on high school athletics.

Tools and Software:

  • eBay is preparing to release a developer platform for the creation of new tools that will then be available for sellers to use.
  • Fans of the Firefox Internet browser will be able to download Firefox 3, the latest iteration of the service, later today.
  • Apple provided more details on SproutCore, a Flash-alternative that allows for the creation of web applications that look and feel like desktop tools.
