imeem Opens Back-End — and Music Catalog — to Developers

Entirely open

Following the examples of MySpace, Bebo and Facebook, music-streaming social network imeem will avail its back-end to software developers.

Programmers can customize the existing imeem media player and leverage imeem's social graph, including users, friends and associated profile data.

But developers won't just be able to create apps for the site; they will also have imeem's catalog of licensed music at their disposal, reports Wired.

imeem has deals with all four major record labels as well as many indie labels.

Applications on the imeem Media Platform can access the entire catalog, which will likely yield new music-discovery and listening tools. Photos and videos on the site are also open.

In the coming months, imeem plans to add support for OpenSocial, so apps built for associated sites like MySpace will also be imeem-compatible.

imeem has over 24 million users.
